Question: Bmv auto insurance verification?

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone out there knows the process that DMVs/ Patrol Officers use to verify auto insurance policies. Is there a database they look them up in? Do they just call the insurance company? How do they verify that insurance cards are "the real deal? "
