Because the coverages are waaay worse on an American policy than they are on a comparable Canadian policy. In every province except Quebec the minimum liability limit you're required to carry is a combined $200,000 per accident for bodily injury and property damage (in Quebec compensation for bodily injury is handled by the government). In some states the minimum liability limit you're required to carry can be as low as $15,000 per person/ $30,000 per accident for bodily injury and $5,000 per accident for property damage. Also depending on which province you're in the compensation you receive for injuries sustained in an auto accident (which in many provinces is a required coverage) are far superior to any policy in any state. Some may say we live in a nanny state with all of these required coverages and relatively high limits ($200,000 doesn't go as far as it used to, and 99% of my clients carry a higher limit), however if you read the posts in this forum you'll be shocked how many posts involve Americans complaining that the vehicle that hit them had low limits and they still have outstanding medical bills, no compensation for lost wages, etc. and asking how they can get the rest of their bills paid off since the other party doesn't have any money. You don't see Canadians asking those questions. |
