Question: Will my auto insurance pay for engine damage not caused by an accident?

Unless you have a VERY unusual policy, it does not cover mechanical failure. Any thing is possible, but the coverage you are asking about is normally a separate 'extended warranty'. On that subject, the VAST majority of extended warranties are grossly overpriced.

Unlikely as the alternative to an accident is owner neglect or accidental damage by the owner, neither of which would be covered

No, that is what extended warranty covers. (or some companies sell repair insurance where they split the bill of repairs with you.. but it's a difference service from standard auto insurance)

No, it was inevitable, but you know it would happen sooner or later, unfortunately, the auto insurance will not cover for this type of damage.
